故事发生在北宋中期，奸商苏光平（李建义 饰）在利益的趋势之下决定同傲龙堡主人石无忌（戚迹 饰）联姻，石无忌挑选了身份卑微的庶出女子苏幻儿（赵丽颖 饰），然而苏幻儿的个性桀骜不驯，竟然斗胆逃婚，无奈之下，样貌和苏幻儿极为相似的杨意柳（赵丽颖 饰）代替苏幻儿嫁进了石家。在石家，杨意柳吃尽了苦头，受尽了折磨，然而，坚强善良的她并没有就此自暴自弃，而是靠着自己的努力，不断的感化着周围的人们。一场意外中，杨意柳救了四小姐石无暇（郑茜 饰），之后，又凭借着自己的聪明才智，化解了家庭内部的诸多矛盾，随着时间的推移，杨意柳和石无忌之间渐渐产生了真挚的夫妻之情，可是，就在此时，石无忌的知己马仙梅（杨梓墨 饰）出现在了两人面前，要求一个名分。
该剧改编自横关大的同名小说，刻画了两位性格、价值观、搜查方针完全相反的刑警。山田凉介饰演神崎隆一，田中圭饰演黑木贤司，两人既是刑警又是秘密的异母兄弟。其中神崎隆一是一名充满人情味且一本正经的刑警，他更愿意相信人类好的部分，而黑木贤司是一名破天荒的干练刑警，他以“怀疑他人”为武器解读案件。

王SIR（任达华）、雪玲（郑裕玲）、龙哥（梁家仁）、阿友（张学友）、达叔（吴孟达）、阿丹（甄子丹）都是反毒组的警察，他们之间关系很好象兄弟一般，在一次行动中他们并肩作战，一举摧毁了一个毒品窝点，可遗憾的是让毒犯头子跑掉了。正当他们庆祝胜利的时候，毒犯头子找到了他们并且杀死了龙哥。为了给龙哥报仇，找到毒犯头子，大家采取了各种手段，终于找到了毒犯头子，并击毙了他。在一次意外中，阿友拍到了达叔和毒犯交易的过程，他便告诉阿丹和王 SIR，王SIR知道后为了保全自己于是杀了阿丹灭口，又栽赃阿友，使他被停职，然而这一举动引起阿友的怀疑。一天，阿友的女朋友阿美（温碧霞）在家发现了这盘录像带，并知道了王SIR与达叔也是同伙，但为了救阿友她还是把录像带交给了王SIR，从而导致了杀身之祸。这时阿友与雪玲终于明白了一切，于是……
